  "Fun" Hunt Test- Aldie 2012

At our NBC Specialty in Aldie, September 29-October 3, 2012, we have added something new to our scheduled activities.   We will have a “Fun” Hunt Test on Sunday September 30, 2012 in the Enclosure (fenced-in area) of the grounds.  It will be structured similarly to the Bassett Hound Club of America rules & regulations for their Hunt Test.  But please keep in mind that this is for “Fun” and no titles will be awarded.  It is a fun event and an opportunity for an owner to demonstrate their hound’s ability for which they were bred.

Our judges will be : Mandy Bobbitt & Carol Pyrkosz

Marshalls will be Jan Weiher, Carol McElroy & Ron Anderson

Field Trial Secretary is Bill Guappone

The dogs  will be run in a brace format with a random selection of bracemates the morning of our Hunt Test.

What are the categories to be evaluated?

1) Ability to Find
            2) Use of Voice
            3) Line Ability
            4) Adaptability

Each category is scored on a scale of 1 – 10 with a minimum score of 5 in each category with an average score of 6 or higher.

Please note: There will be no test for Gun Shyness!

How are the categories defined?

Ability To Find:  An aptitude to recognize promising cover and eagerness to explore it.

Use of Voice:  The proper use of voice is proclaiming all finds and denoting all progress by giving tongue, yet keeping silent when not in contact with scent that can be progressed.  For brace, true tongue is honest claiming that running mates can depend on.

Line Ability:   Proficiency for keeping control of the trail while making the best possible progress.

Adaptability:  The ability to adjust quickly to changes in scenting conditions in varying terrain.

The hound always shows determination to succeed no matter what the odds.

Judges Scoring

The evaluation of a dog’s abilities can never be precise.  The primary purpose of the Scent Hound is to hunt, find & circle game to ground or to the hunter so a kill can be made as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

A hound’s hunting abilities are scored against the established standard.  The judge observes and records how and to what degree the hunting abilities of the hound may meet or fall short of the established standard.

In evaluating a hound’s hunting abilities in a Hunt Test, the Judge must assign a numerical score of 0 to 10 that reflects his estimation of each hound’s hunting ability with a score of 5 being passing.  The decision not to award a qualifying score must be the consensus of both judges.  If the judges score independently, they confer to determine a final score.

In Brace, the hounds should search individually but should remain in sight/communication with the handler and other pack mates.   All hounds in the brace should properly “hark in” when game is found.

It should be noted that this test is non-competitive between hounds; each hound is scored on its own performance not compared to the merits of other hounds entered.

Time

After 10 minutes of hunting the handler(s) may ask the Judges for the assistance of the gallery in finding game.  After a total of thirty minutes if no game has been produced, the entry will be picked up.

The gallery should not assist in the finding of game until asked to do so by the judges.  The dog who works, finds and runs game with little or no outside help should be rewarded with a higher score than one who depends on a gallery

The Gun

No Firearms will be utilized.

Marshals

It shall be the duty of one marshal to assist the judges and to carry out their instructions, including regulations and controlling the gallery and seeing to it that the gallery is kept separate from and behind the judges and that no one in the gallery talks to the judges while the hounds are down.  Marshalls shall see that the hounds are ready when called assist to make it a smooth running test.

The Gallery

No person shall make any remarks nor give any information which might affect the actions of the persons handling the hounds or the running of the hounds unless information is specifically requested by the judges.  Any person so offending may be expelled from the running grounds on orders from the judges and points of merit shall not be allowed any hound whose handler acts upon such information.

Score Cards

Each hound shall have its individual score card.  In order to receive a “Qualifying Score”, a hound must have an “Official Score” of 5 or above in each category.  In addition, the average score of all categories must be at least 6.

A “Control Sheet” will be available for public inspection.

It will begin on Sunday at 6:30 a.m. with the drawing of brace mates.  Closing for entries will be September 12, 2012, as with the Specialty entries.   Entries are $15.00 per dog.  No dog may be entered that has a hunt test title.

Commemorative items will be given as prizes for qualifying scores.  Your dogs will be identified by colored collars and will not have painted numbers on their sides.

Any questions, can be directed to Bill Guappone merrymusic@atlanticbb.net.
