SHOPPING: Oregon is a sales tax free state, so everything is automatically about 8% or so cheaper than most other states. So time for big electronics purchases like iPad etc! There is a shopping mall about 2 miles away and you can find the list of stores at the Cascade Shopping Center.
RENTAL CARS: are comparatively cheap in the USA (they drive on the right side of the road) and it is normal for all cars to be automatic. All the major car rental companies have offices at the airport – Avis, Budget, Alamo, Enterprise and Hertz and then you can always use Hotwire.
As the hotel has a free shuttle from airport you may not need to rent a car unless you plan to do some additional tourist things.
There is often free free wireless internet access available in many locations (McDonalds and Starbucks as well as possibly your hotel) so you can stay in touch with the rest of the world. But don’t forget that the US has 110 volts and different plugs for electrical appliances. So bring your adapter.
CELL PHONES: Most other countries in the world use GSM technology, and most American carriers do not. However T-Mobile is a GSM carrier, and so if you can roam you can use this network.
T- Mobile does have a plan offered just for tourists you can find out about it here, its good for 21 days and gives you 1,000 minutes of talk, unlimited texts and data, with up to 2GB of 4G LTE data for $30. Click here for details. And there is a store at the above mentioned Cascade Station
