2018 Oregon Regional Judges

Breed: Mrs Lesley Childs (Australia) Brialey Beagles

I live in Cootamundra in rural NSW, Australia. My background is in horses, I competed in Dressage and judged both Dressage, hacking and led classes. My husband and I have been breeding and showing Beagles under the Brialey prefix for 20 years.
We have exported our dogs to the USA, United Kingdom, Asia and Europe, and our dogs have been consistent winners.  Beagles that we have bred have been shown in America, Canada, Hawaii, New Zealand, Malaysia, The Philippines, The Czech Republic, Denmark, South Africa, Germany, Italy and the UK. We have imported Beagles from The United Kingdom, America and most recently Italy. In Australia, our dogs are Best In Show All breeds Winners, as well as winning at Specialty and Royal Show level. Our dogs have won under judges from the USA/Canada, The UK, and Europe.
I am licensed to judge all Sporting and Hound Breeds. I am currently studying to add the Herding Group to my qualifications.
Beagles are my passion, and are naturally my favourite breed. I have owned and shown Salukis and have a great interest in Whippets, Afghans, Flat Coated Retrievers and Curly Coated Retrievers.
I have judged Beagles at Specialist level in Australia, at the Warsaw International Dog Show in Poland, at the Very Special Show in Denmark, in South Africa and most recently at the International Dog Show in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Sweepstakes & Juniors: Ms Sylvie McGee – Sweepstakes Judge

Mrs Sylvie McGee - Sweepstakes Judge
Mrs Sylvie McGee – Sweepstakes Judge

I grew up with dogs that included several mixed breeds, a St Bernard and then an Irish Wolfhound. I came to Basset Hounds initially when my then-partner and I were trying to find a dog we could agree on. Big dog (for me). Short stature (for her). Initially our Bassets were rescue dogs. Then seeking a healthy, well-socialized pet, we were introduced to a breeder who is to this day my mentor, and obtained Phoebe, who we agreed to “try showing for a year”. That was in 1997.

Phoebe (CH. Sasquatch’s Equinox Moon) became our foundation bitch, and led to a true love affair with the breed. In the past two decades, I have bred and shown Basset Hounds under the HeavenScent kennel name, and I continue to enjoy new litters and new adventures of my dogs in the conformation ring.

My love of Bassets led to my love of hounds in general, and I am thrilled to judge now 10 hound breeds as well as Junior Showmanship. Even better, I get to continue to learn about more hound breeds – including Beagles – and I really enjoy the depth of learning that judging requires. Every breed is unique and learning about each breed deepens what I know about others. What could be better than weekends observing and enjoying dogs and hanging out with dog people?

My goal in the ring is to have every exhibitor feel that their dog was given a good and fair evaluation and the opportunity to showcase their strengths. I thank you for your confidence in me and the opportunity to judge your Beagles in sweepstakes this summer!

Breed: Ms Celeste Gonzalez

Celeste M. Gonzalez is a graduate of the University of Florida, majoring in Animal Science and is also a Registered Quality Assurance Professional – Good Clinical Practices, Certified Clinical Research Professional, and a Certified Veterinary Technician. She works in the medical device field in clinical research and development after a long period of service in animal health, both in clinic and research.
Celeste began showing dogs in 1975, while still in college, with the purchase of her first Basset Hound and began coursing and showing sight hounds with the purchase of her first Saluki the same year. She finished her first champion, a Saluki, in 1976. Participation in lure field coursing during the infancy and development of ASFA garnered her Salukis their ASFA FCh. One of her owner-trained-handled Salukis also garnered a C.D. in obedience. Salukis remained a part of her life until 1989 and she continues to be active in Basset Hounds to this day as an owner, breeder, and exhibitor.
She continued to show her Bassets through her college career and began to breed in 1980. Her Jolly Time Hounds kennel has produced numerous Basset champions from a very small breeding program. Celeste has dabbled in tracking and field work with her Bassets and is proud of the accomplishments of her dogs that have gone to field trial homes. She is also very involved in Basset Hound health and her dogs are tested for hereditary familial thrombopathia and glaucoma.
Celeste has judged Basset Hound specialties across the United States and judged the Basset Hound Club of Spain national specialty in 2009. She is approved to judge the Hound Group, and approved to judge all but 4 of the Terrier breeds.
